“Girl Gang” Interview: PAIGE FRASER

Paige Fraser is our 17th featured “Girl Gang” Interviewee that lives and breathes NYC. She has been a dancer for 15 years and is now a professional dancer for Ailey II, which is the junior company of the legendary Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre. This girl has brains, beauty, and ballet running throughout her body! Not only is she an amazing performer, but a stylish one too. She’s been featured in Lucky Magazine, Dance Teacher Magazine, hair shows, and many newspaper posts (national and international). Where is your favorite place to have fun in NYC?:

Well I just turned 21, so I wasn’t really able to party at clubs but my favorite place to have fun in NYC so far has been Empire Hotel rooftop. I also enjoy kicking back with friends not really a fan of clubbing.

What is your life motto?:

Currently my favorite life motto would have to be “If you love what you do then you won’t work a day in your life”. Since I was about 13 I knew I wanted to dance. Sitting at a desk with a 9-5 seemed boring and wasn’t the lifestyle I wanted.

What are your goals?:

My goals are to continue to dance professionally. With Ailey II Ive been able to travel the world and tour. I would like to continue with this and hopefully join other companies or dance on broadway. I also enjoy modeling and have done some print work, so continuing with that would be nice!

What are your biggest pet peeves?:

My biggest pet peeve are people who complain about things 24/7 and don’t maintain positivity. We all go through things and it’s all about how we handle the situation we are in. I also dislike when people feel the need to constantly talk about how well they are doing and brag about it. I find inspiration from artists who let their work do the talk.

What is a materialistic obsession you’re currently having?:

I am not a materialistic person but I would love to one day purchase Christian Loubs just because! I much rather purchase clothes that I have the money for instead of going into debt. Personally I love the good finds at thrift stores. If you know fashion you can look good in a 20 dollar dress, shoe, or bag.

What do you prefer, weed or liquor?:

I don’t smoke, as for drinking..on ocassion in moderation. That isn’t the focus in my life nor is it good for a dancer. Don’t do it kids!

What is a wild fantasy/dream of yours?:

My biggest dream and ambition is to be on a poster or billboard one day. That would be amazing!!!

Where did you see yourself today 5 years ago?:

Wow 5 years ago I didnt see myself here. I was always a hard worker but I’ve come a very long way with my dancing and I hope to keep going. Im originally from the Bronx and I was raised by Jamaican immigrants. My parents supported me with anything and everything even when times got hard! I love them so much.

What are you currently working on?:

Currently I am working with AileyII and continuing to perfect my craft of dancing. Im always interested in any modeling gigs/shows on the side. But my priority is dance and touching people who pay to watch! Also to inspire other dancers especially those of color, because it gets discouraging sometimes.
